Blue Cat, the award-winning chili, and a secret ingredient

Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.

Blue Cat decided to bring chili to the church Fall Festival at the last minute, as he was bringing 8 people and didn’t want to be a slouch. So he threw some chili together at the last minute and put it in a crock pot.

What he didn’t know was that he had done exactly the right thing to win one of the chili cook-off awards. Chili tastes better the longer it simmers, but cooking it for a long time tends to make the chili more like soup. By not having the time to cook his chili for a long time, Blue Cat’s entry was perfect for winning “The Chunkiest” award at the Festival. And so he lucked into an award. (It also didn’t hurt to have included his two secret ingredients – pineapple and Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce.)

So planning is good, but not always required. Here’s to improvising!

Blue Cat’s Award-Winning Chili Recipe:

  • 1 pound ground sirloin
  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 4 cloves of garlic – chopped
  • 2 cans of corn – drained
  • 2 cans of beans – drained and rinsed (Blue Cat uses kidney and black beans)
  • 2 cans of diced tomatoes – not drained
  •  1 can of crushed pineapple
  • Some chili powder – to taste
  • Some salt
  • 2 squirts of Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce

Brown the meats with the garlic, chili powder and salt. Mix everything together. Cook until you run out of time. Enjoy the chili…
